5 Surprising Family Vacation Spots

Vacation is calling. We’ve got some surprising destinations – which might not otherwise be viewed as spots for family relaxation and bonding – that should be picks on your list.

Dare to step outside the box and view some of the country’s major cities. Known for their hustle and bustle, these vibrant municipalities are ideal for spending some quality time with family. From getting in some beach time in Maryland to luxuriating in the capital of the South (Atlanta, of course!), an adventure awaits everyone.

1.  North Beach, Maryland

Baltimore and nearby Washington, D.C., aren’t the only draws to this little state. Found on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, North Beach and Chesapeake Beach are sister beaches and during the summer months, a shuttle can be taken between the two. Fun in the sun is the name of the game with both spots. Conclude ocean frolic time with a stroll on the boardwalk for fresh seafood eats or buying kitschy seaside-inspired souvenirs.

2. Atlanta, Georgia

As the Coke capital of the world, Atlanta has more to offer families vacationing than just tours around the emblematic World of Coca-Cola museum and scrumptious Southern fare. There’s the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world and the perfect place to set off on a quest to find Nemo; the Zoo Atlanta, minutes away from Grant Park; the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, featuring a planetarium and dinosaur exhibits; and the Atlanta Botanical Garden, where you’ll get a chance to stop and smell the roses right within city limits.

For more family-inspired fun, head 20 minutes east of the city to Stone Mountain Park, a park centered around a massive monadnock (an isolated hill or ridge of rock) of almost 900 feet. At Stone Mountain Park, ride a sky bucket from the bottom of the mountain to the top to see beautiful views of Atlanta’s skyline and the North Georgia mountains. Stay a little later to have a picnic during the nightly laser shows projected on the face of the mountain.

3. Chicago, Illinois

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Chicago? You might think about its huge events which bring thousands of people into the city annually – events like The Taste of Chicago, a wonderland for foodies; and Lollapalooza, a music festival that has endured for 25 years.

Chicago also makes a great city to head to for a family vacation. It’s the mecca for awe-inspiring, interactive museums. They’re all about family fun! Check out top favorites like the Chicago Children’s Museum, Wonder Works, and the DuPage Children’s Museum.

4. Denver, Colorado

Snowboarding and skiing are big attractions that draw people from all over the world to this western city. But surprisingly, Denver has a plethora of attractions not involving snow. Make plans to do things

For those with NASA dreams or an overall fascination with the stars and space, make a visit to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

5. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a must-stop for those seeking some time to release and relax. Views of the Blue Ridge Mountains can be seen in the distance. For adventure seekers, there are a multitude of ziplining routes to send you zooming like a bird through the lush trees and greenery. Relish in the mystery and brilliance of the forest at the Forest Discovery Center at Cradle of Forestry with exhibits on forest history.

Another surprising family-friendly attraction is the renowned Biltmore Estate. There’s a children’s menu available upon request at the on-site restaurant and a treasure hunting tour to keep boredom at bay.

Be creative and view this year’s family vacation as a chance to step outside of your comfort zone. Choose a new city. Go to the opposite side of the country. Dare to create some wonderful memories you’ll be reflecting on for years to come.
