Southern Comforts from Charleston

The days are getting longer and warmer, and springtime is slowly but surely pushing its way into the world. That is, unless you’re talking about sunny Charleston, in which case spring has already arrived in full force!

This charming southern coastal town has the benefit of short winters and long summers, which is especially favorable – the spring and summer months are when Charleston shows its true magic. In case you’ve never paid a visit to this pretty historic town, we’ll paint you a picture: you’re strolling down the cobblestone streets, soaking in the colorful antebellum homes and picturesque gardens. The smell of magnolias is in the air, the sun is shining on your face, and the ocean spray as you walk along The Battery is welcoming and refreshing. You shop, you sightsee, and perhaps most memorably, you indulge in the most delightful southern comfort foods.

Does Charleston sound like your cup of tea? (…Sweet tea, naturally!)

Hammock Pack is thrilled to bring the charming city of Charleston to your doorstep with this month’s box of goodies.

Cookies from Grey Ghost Bakery

South Carolina-native Katherine Frankstone has been whipping up sweet treats for her friends and family since the young age of 5, when her father taught her to bake in their Lowcountry family kitchen. Eventually, she turned her passion into a business and launched Grey Ghost Bakery, named after the friendly Pawleys Island spirit who allegedly warns and protects local residents during summer storms.

Inspired by her Lowcountry upbringing, Katherine now uses the freshest and most natural ingredients, like pure cane sugar, molasses, crystallized ginger, and whole eggs, to craft her chewy made-from-scratch cookies. One bite and you’re sure to feel as if you’ve been transported back to the days of sunny childhood summers on the South Carolina coast.

“Sweet Tea” Hand & Body Wash from Charleston Soap Chef

Charleston Soap Chef founder Jeanine Gantt started making soap in her own kitchen in 2003 as a way to relieve stress and experiment creatively. Fast forward several years and her body care products are now beloved favorites at the famous Charleston Farmer’s Market. She strives to make products that are good for your skin while creating delightfully southern scents, such as “Charleston Sweetgrass” and “Southern Magnolia.”

This “Sweet Tea” Hand & Body Wash is a play on the refreshing southern staple with a zesty hint of freshly squeezed lemon. It’s made with algae extract and honey to cleanse your skin while ensuring it stays silky and smooth.

Buttermilk Biscuit Mix from Callie’s Charleston Biscuits

Carrie Morey founded Callie’s Charleston Biscuits in 2005 in order to share her mother’s buttery handmade biscuits with the world. Today, she strives to keep the tradition of southern biscuit-making alive through her cookbook, her grab-and-go biscuit restaurants, her “biscuit bootcamp” retreats, and of course, her finely-crafted baked goods and ingredients.

Now it’s your turn to master the art of biscuit making with this time-tested dry mix! Just stir in some butter, cream cheese, and buttermilk with a bag of mix. The smell of a dozen tender biscuits baking in your oven will envelop you and show you the true magic of southern comfort cuisine.

Whole Bean Coffee from Ripple Coffee

Ripple Coffee was founded by Charleston-native Paulette Sullivan with the goal of sourcing strong, flavorful coffee beans in a way that sustains and supports coffee-growing communities. Coffee beans are purchased directly from female farmers in rural areas such as Peru, Rwanda, Guatemala, and Bolivia, and are roasted in small batches by hand. What’s more, 5% of all sales go back into the pockets of these communities to support initiatives such as infrastructure, education, and female empowerment.

The whole bean blends offered by Ripple Coffee include flavorful options like almond, dark chocolate, and molasses. Not only is every sip sure to taste amazing, but you can feel just as good about supporting a small business that gives back to hard-working women around the globe.

These treats are just a small sample of what Charleston has to offer its visitors. We hope a few sweet southern comforts will help paint a picture of the heritage, pride, and local flavor of this incredible city. Each of these small businesses is dedicated to providing top-quality products that tell a unique personal story and we’re proud to partner with them.
